How to set up a barcode scanner with Ebriza POS NEXT?

Connect a Bluetooth barcode scanner (e.g. Zebra DS2278) to your iPad and add products to a bill simply by scanning — in 3 easy steps.

Written by Andreea Lazar

You can use a Bluetooth barcode scanner with Ebriza POS NEXT on iPad to add products to a bill just by scanning. Setup has three steps: connect the scanner, add barcodes to your products, then scan.

Do you have a Zebra device? Zebra makes two different devices used with Ebriza. This article is about the barcode scanner, which connects via Bluetooth through the iPad’s Settings and does not need to be added to Ebriza. If you have a Zebra label printer instead — the one that connects via LAN cable and prints product labels — see the article “How to install the Zebra label printer? [Ebriza POS NEXT]”.

The scanner and the scale are used together in the store, but in Ebriza they require two different product configurations. Before following the steps below, check which one you need:

  • Regular scanning - you scan the barcode printed on the product. There is no mandatory format for the SKU. See Step 2 below.

  • Scale label - you scan the label printed by the scale for products sold by kilogram or gram. In this case, the format matters and the product requires an additional setting. See the “Products sold by kilogram/gram (Dibal scale labels)” section.

Important regarding the brand: Zebra manufactures barcode scanners and label printers, never scales. If you have a scale, check its brand - integration with Ebriza works only with Dibal scales.

What you need?

  • An iPad with Ebriza POS NEXT (updated to the latest App Store version).

  • A Bluetooth scanner that works as a keyboard (HID mode) — for example the Zebra DS2278.

The app is currently available only on iPad/iPhone (iOS 16 or newer). Android is not supported.

Step 1 — Connect the scanner to the iPad

The scanner is paired directly from the tablet's settings, not from within Ebriza.

  1. On the iPad, open Settings → Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.

  2. Put the scanner into Bluetooth pairing mode (usually by scanning the "Bluetooth / HID" barcode in the scanner's manual).

  3. In the iPad's Bluetooth device list, tap the scanner to connect it.

Once connected, the scanner stays paired with the tablet and works automatically in Ebriza.

Step 2 — Add the barcode to products in Ebriza

For a product to be found when scanned, each product must have its barcode saved in the SKU field.

  1. Go to your Admin account → Configuration → Products and open the desired product.

  2. There is no mandatory format for the SKU when using regular scanning: it can be any code, numeric or alphanumeric, of any length. The only requirement is that it must exactly match the code printed on the product. The prefixes and check digit described in the scale section apply ONLY to scale labels, not to regular products.

  3. Save. Repeat for each product you want to scan.

Note: The code in the SKU field must be identical to the one on the packaging (with no extra spaces).

Step 3 — Scan in the app

If the message “product not found” appears, it means that the scanned value matches neither a SKU nor the name of any product — go back to Step 2. The value remains in the search bar so you can check or correct it manually.

  1. If the scanned value does not match any SKU but does match the name of a product, the app treats it as a search term: it leaves it in the search bar and filters the product list. No error message appears, and nothing is added to the receipt.

Do you also use an external keyboard with the iPad?

A scanner in HID mode is seen by the iPad exactly like a keyboard, so the app cannot distinguish them by device — it distinguishes them by typing speed. A scanner sends all characters in a single, very fast burst, while a person types much more slowly. Anything typed manually is therefore not treated as a scan.

  • You can type normally in the “Search for a product” bar even when the scanner is connected: the text remains in the field, the product list is filtered as you type, and the “product not found” message no longer appears.

  • Typed text is never added to the receipt on its own, even if it matches exactly one product. To add the product found through the search, tap it in the list.

  • Pressing Enter after typing a search term does not turn the text into a scan either — it remains a normal search.

If the scanner is no longer detected at all (there is no beep, nothing is added, and no message appears), check two things in the scanner settings: that it is in HID (keyboard) mode and that no delay between characters is enabled (the setting usually appears as “transmission delay” or “inter-character delay”). A scanner that sends characters slowly is interpreted as typing. Also, make sure that a barcode contains at least 3 characters.

Step 4 — Products sold by kilogram/gram (Dibal scale labels)

For products sold by kilogram or gram, the scale prints a barcode label that also contains the weight. The scale does not connect to Ebriza and is not added to the device list - the connection to the POS is made through the barcode scanner, which reads the label. Only Dibal scales are supported.

What needs to be set on the product

The product needs two things at the same time. If either one is missing, the label will no longer be interpreted as a scale label and scanning will result in the message “product not found”:

  1. Product SKU = the PLU inside the label, meaning the 5 digits in the middle, exactly as printed, including any leading zeros (00001, not 1). Do not enter the entire code from the label.

  2. Product unit of measurement = KG or G.

How the Dibal label is structured

The label has 13 characters, in the format AABBBBBCCCCCE. Using the example 2100001018200:

  • AA - prefix for weighable products: 21, 22, 23, 24 or 25 (in the example: 21)

  • BBBBB - product SKU, meaning the PLU (in the example: 00001)

  • CCCCC - weight, expressed in grams; 1.82 kg is written as 01820 (in the example: 01820)

  • E - check digit (in the example: 0)

The quantity on the receipt is calculated by the POS based on the product's unit of measurement: if the product is set to KG, the quantity is 1.82; if it is set to G, the quantity is 1820. This is why the unit of measurement is mandatory.

About the “Bulk” option

“Bulk” is not a separate saved field; it is how the product's unit of measurement is displayed: enabled means KG, while disabled means piece. Two practical consequences:

  • If it seems that the “Bulk” checkbox is not being saved, check the product's unit of measurement. If it is set to KG (or G), the setting has been saved - the checkbox is displayed based on the unit of measurement.

  • For products sold by gram, the toggle alone is not enough: it sets the unit to KG. The G unit must be selected from the product's unit of measurement.

Scale programming

Scale programming (buttons, PLUs, label format) is done directly on the scale, not in Ebriza. For this, contact the company you purchased the scale from or their technical support team.

The On-Screen Keyboard No Longer Appears When the Scanner Is Connected

Scan the product’s barcode with the bill open. The app first searches the scanned value in the products’ SKU field, and if it does not find an identical SKU, it also searches the product names. If only one result remains in the product list and it is a product, it is added to the bill with a quantity of 1, the scan sound plays, and the search bar is cleared. If the product has mandatory options or a bonus promotion, the selection step opens first, exactly as when you tap the product in the list.

If multiple results remain in the list — multiple products, or a product together with a matching category — nothing is added to the bill: the value remains in the search bar, the product list remains filtered by it, and you choose the desired product by tapping it.

Searching by name works the same way as searching from the search bar: it can match part of the name, uppercase and lowercase letters do not matter, and diacritics do not matter either. The search is performed in the product name, internal name, and SKU. Only a product can be added to the bill — a category is never added — but if the search term also brings a category into the results, the list contains multiple results and nothing is added automatically.

If the message “product not found” appears, it means that the scanned value does not match any product, either by SKU or by name, and it does not filter anything in the product list either — go back to Step 2. The value remains in the search bar so you can check or correct it manually.
