“Duplicate Value” error when saving products – why it appears and how to fix it

What Ebriza checks when saving a product, why a simple bulk price change can be rejected, and how to unblock the save operation.

When does the “Duplicate Value” error appear?

When you save a product, or when you save multiple products at once using Bulk Edit or Quick Edit, the save operation may be rejected with the message “Duplicate Value.” The message shows in parentheses WHICH field is duplicated, but it does not tell you which product is causing the issue. Read the text in parentheses first, because there are two different problems with different solutions:

  • Duplicate Value (Name) – the product name is duplicated. See the “Name rule” section below.

  • Duplicate Value (SKU) – the SKU code is duplicated. See the “SKU rule” section below.

Name rule: the product name does NOT have to be unique

A product name does not have to be unique in the product catalog. Two products can have the same name, with one condition: they must have different values for the “Is for Delivery” checkbox.

The combination of a “dine-in product” and its “delivery twin” is therefore allowed and is actually the supported way of working on the platform. What is not allowed is for both products to have the same checkbox value — meaning both unchecked or both checked.

There is a practical reason for this rule: a product marked “Is for Delivery” is printed on the fiscal receipt with “ d.” added to its name. For example, “Pizza” appears on the receipt as “Pizza d.” The names therefore remain distinct on the fiscal receipt, which is why the pair is accepted.

SKU rule

The SKU must be unique across the entire product catalog, without exception and regardless of the delivery checkbox. If the displayed error is “Duplicate Value (SKU)”, you have two active products with exactly the same code.

What does NOT affect the validation?

  • Deleted products. The validation only checks products that have not been deleted, so a product you deleted will never keep a name or SKU “occupied.”

  • The “Internal Name” field. This field does not participate in the uniqueness check in any way, so filling it in will not unblock anything. Also, you need to save the product in order to fill it in, which is exactly the operation that is currently blocked.

  • Category, price, VAT, tags, and location availability. None of these fields are part of the uniqueness rule.

Important: inactive products do count. A product set to “Inactive” has not been deleted, so it continues to keep its name and SKU. Deactivating a product does not unblock the save operation.

Why does a simple bulk price change fail with “Duplicate Value”?

This is the most common scenario, which is why the error can seem unrelated: you selected multiple products in Product Catalog – Products, used Bulk Edit to change only the price, and the save operation was rejected — even though you did not change either the name or the SKU.

The explanation is that bulk saving fully revalidates every selected product, not just the field you changed. A duplicate that has existed in the account for a long time, with no connection to the price, can block the entire operation immediately.

In practice:

  • The product causing the issue is not necessarily the one you are looking for. It is a selected product that conflicts with another active product in the catalog, whether that other product is selected or not.

  • A single problematic product stops the entire batch. There is no partial save.

  • The same thing happens when saving a single product and during import — the same validation is applied.

How to unblock the save operation

All of the following options are available under Product Catalog – Products.

  1. Check “Is for Delivery” on the delivery twin. This is the correct solution when the pair was created for delivery, which is almost always the case. It can also be done in bulk: select only one product from each pair — the one used for delivery — then use Bulk Edit, check “Change Is for Delivery”, select “Is for Delivery”, and click Save. Be careful with your selection: Bulk Edit applies the same value to all selected products, so if you select both products in a pair, they will become identical again and the error will persist. Also keep in mind the effect: these products will appear on the fiscal receipt with “ d.” after the name.

  2. Rename one of the two products if it is not a delivery pair but a genuine duplicate that was accidentally added twice. The product name is not used as an integration key anywhere, so changing it is safe.

  3. Remove the delivery twin. If all you wanted was a different price on the delivery platform, you can set it directly on the original product using “+ Add delivery platform price”, so you do not need a second product at all. See the article “Preferred price for delivery platforms.”

To prevent the issue from recurring, the supported way to create a delivery twin is through Product Catalog – Products: select the products, click “Clone”, and check “Are for Delivery.” The clone keeps the same name, is automatically marked for delivery, and receives an SKU with the “-delivery” suffix, so it passes the validation immediately.

Important: do not change the SKU to fix a duplicate product name

The SKU is the identifier used by delivery platforms to match products. It is sent in the synchronized menu to Bolt Food, Wolt, Glovo, and Tazz, and when an order is received, the product is matched using this identifier. If you change it, the menu on the delivery platform will still contain the old code, and incoming orders will no longer match the product correctly — leaving you with a broken delivery integration instead of simply fixing a duplicate name.

Only change the SKU if the displayed error is specifically “Duplicate Value (SKU)”. In that case, resynchronize the menu for each brand after making the change.
